BGMEA and GRI Institutionalize Strategic Partnership for Apparel Sustainability Transparency
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) have formally signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement to institutionalize the multi-year Improving Transparency for Sustainable Business (ITSB) Initiative in Bangladesh's textile and apparel sector.
Building on close collaboration since 2025, this landmark agreement establishes BGMEA as the strategic partner providing sector-wide leadership to advance a shared vision for transparent, impact-driven, and responsible business conduct across Bangladesh's Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry.
The ITSB Initiative & SusNex's Role in National Capacity Building
The ITSB Initiative is designed as an inclusive multi-stakeholder platform supporting small, medium, and large enterprises, alongside regulators, industry associations, investors, workers, and civil society. The Sustainability Nexus (SusNex) Ltd. serves as the official training and outreach partner in Bangladesh, responsible for developing and delivering nationally contextualized masterclasses, workshops, webinars, consultations, and stakeholder dialogues.
The initiative has already demonstrated exceptional sector-wide momentum. Successive engagements conducted in May and July 2026 attracted nearly 300 registrations collectively from across the apparel, footwear, leather, and textile value chains. The May masterclasses introduced facility-level data collection, environmental stewardship, and social impact metrics, while the July sessions focused on investor-grade ESG disclosures, regulatory compliance, and economic impact assessments.
Industry Leadership & Global Perspectives
Commenting on the signing of the agreement, Bastian Buck, Chief of Standards at GRI, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration:
“This ITSB Strategic Partnership Agreement with BGMEA marks an important step in strengthening sustainability transparency and impact-based reporting in Bangladesh’s Textile and Apparel sector. Through ITSB, we look forward to working collaboratively with BGMEA, businesses, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders to strengthen the practical application of the GRI Standards—supporting organizations to identify, manage, and transparently report their most significant impacts. By connecting global reporting standards with nationally relevant capacity building and stakeholder dialogue, we aim to support more credible, decision-useful disclosures and contribute to a more transparent, responsible, and competitive sector in Bangladesh.”
Wasim Zakariah, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Responsible Business Hub (RBH) and Sustainability Reporting at BGMEA, emphasized the operational value for garment manufacturers:
“Bangladesh’s garment industry is making significant progress in environmental sustainability, workplace safety, and responsible business practices. The next step is to strengthen how companies measure, manage, and communicate their sustainability performance. Through this partnership with GRI under the ITSB Initiative, we hope to support businesses in building practical knowledge on sustainability reporting and impact disclosure. Greater transparency will not only help companies respond to evolving expectations from international buyers, investors, and regulators, but also enable them to better understand their own risks, opportunities, and areas for improvement.”
Aligning Bangladesh RMG with International Regulations
The agreement arrives at a crucial juncture as global trade expectations shift rapidly. Mandatory legislative frameworks—such as the European Union's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG), and incoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules—require international brands and buyers to demand verifiable, science-backed ESG disclosures from their sourcing partners.
By implementing GRI Standards, Bangladeshi suppliers gain a structured framework to disclose critical sustainability performance data, including:
- Decarbonization & Climate Action: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1, 2, & 3), energy efficiency, and Science Based Targets (SBTi).
- Resource Stewardship & Circularity: Water consumption, Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC), wastewater treatment, and textile waste management.
- Social & Labor Disclosures: Fair wages, occupational health & safety (OHS), gender equity, and human rights due diligence.
- Global Standards Input: Informing GRI's ongoing development of the global Textile and Apparel Sector Standard.
